Who can be a egg or sperm donor?

Not everyone can donate sperm or an egg. Donors need to meet certain criteria before a sperm bank or a fertility clinic will take a person's DNA.

Reproduction Endocrinologist Dr. Michael Murray, from Northern California Fertility Clinic, outlined a basic donor profile for an egg donor and sperm donor.

Egg Donor Profile Sperm Donor Profile
Age 21 to 30 18 to 40
Payment Up to $6,000 per IVF cycle $100 per donation- allowed to donate 2 to 3 times a week for a period of 1 to 2 years
Health Donor must be perfectly healthy; family must be healthy; no STDs and no drugs Donor must be perfectly healthy; family must be healthy; no STDs and no drugs
Testing Psychological testing and eggs must be fertile Donor must have "super sperm." Freezing sperm will kill 50 percent of the donation.
Medications Donor needs to take IVF injections and hormones for weeks.
