STOCKTON, CA - A suspect is in critical condition, according to San Joaquin General Hospital officials, after being shot during an attempted robbery Sunday night.
Stockton police responded to a home on the 600 block of West Ponce DeLeon around 11:01 p.m., Stockton police Lt. Lee Kissell said.
When officers arrived, they found a woman outside the residence who told police that suspect/s invaded her home and tried to rob her.
Kissell said while the officers talked to the alleged victim, they heard someone yell for help from inside the home. Inside, police found a man with gunshot wound/s.
It's unclear who shot the alleged suspect or what lead up to the shooting.
The man's family said police are not allowing them to see him; they fear he might be dying and would like to say goodbye.
Kissell said the man is in stable condition and is not aware of the hospital's report. He also said the family is not allowed to see the man because he is part of an on-going investigation.
Stockton Det. Joe Silva said officers want to be first to talk to the suspect before anyone else. The man was arrested for home invasion and is in police custody while he gets treatment for his gunshot wounds. Silva said police believe there were other suspects involved in the robbery and shooting.
A friend of the man's family said a public defender is going to try to get a court order Tuesday that would allow the family say goodbye in case he dies.
