OAXACA, Mexico - An earthquake that struck the Oaxaca region of Mexico at 12:02 p.m. local time was revised slightly downward to magnitude 7.4, the United States Geological Society reports.
The epicenter was 15 miles east of the Acapulco resort area and 200 miles south, southeast of Mexico City. Its depth was recorded at 12.4 miles.
The quake was followed by an aftershock that shook southern Mexico, swayed buildings in Mexico City and sent frightened workers and residents into the streets.
Reports of possible injuries and/or damage were slow to come in.
President Obama's older daughter Malia, 13, is on vacation with a school group in Oaxaca in southwestern Mexico, according to reports from the region. A spokeswoman for First Lady Michelle Obama said Malia was "safe and never in danger."
