Dental exam shows skull found in Calaveras County Thursday belongs to Cyndi Vanderheiden

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, CA - The San Joaquin County Coroner's office made a preliminary identification of a skull found Thursday morning in San Andreas.

A forensic dental examination done shows that the skull belongs to Cyndi Vanderheiden, San Joaquin County Sheriff's Deputy Les Garcia said.

The skull was found on property belonging to convicted murderer Wes Shermantine's family. Shermantine was convicted in 2001 of the murder of Vandenheiden, Chevy Wheeler, whose bodies were never found, Paul Cavanuagh and Howard King.

On Friday, deputies found another human skull that may belong to Wheeler in San Andreas.

A forensic odontologist used dental charting, x-rays and photographs to determine that the skull belonged to Vanderheiden.

Garcia said the remains will be submitted to the California Department of Justice for DNA analysis for confirmation.
