Wesley Shermantine, Loren Herzog
1984-99: Alleged killing spree
1985: Victim Chevy Wheeler, 16, of Stockton, last seen getting into Shermantine's pick-up.
1998: Victim Cyndi Vandenheiden, 25, disappears from Clements home after being spotted with Shermantine and Herzog.
1999: Shermantine and Herzog arrested. DNA analysis of blood found in a cabin used by Shermantine's family determined to be Wheeler's.
2001: Shermantine convicted of the murders of Wheeler, Vanderheiden, Howard Michael King, 35, and Paul Raymond Cavanaugh, 31. Herzog was found guilty of the Vanderheiden, King and Cavanaugh's murders. King and Cavanaugh, two drifters, were slain as they sat in a parked car on Roberts Island. Nearby tire tracks matched Shermantine's truck.
Shermantine was sentenced to death while Herzog got 78 years.
2004: An appeals court ruled Herzog's confession were coerced and his sentence was reduced to 14 years.
2010: - Herzog released on parole.
January, 2012: - Herzog commits suicide. Bounty hunter Leonard Padilla offers Shermanine on San Quentin's Death Row $18,000 for information leading to the discovery of other victims.
February, 2012: - Using map made by Shermantine, searchers find two skulls and human bones, possibly those of Wheeler and Vandenheiden, on Calaveras County property once owned by Shermantine's family. The search continues there and at a well near Linden in San Joaquin County where Shermantine alleged Herzog dumped other victims.
