WOODLAND, CA - An alleged attempt by two Sacramento men to return stolen merchandise to a Woodland Walmart backfired Thursday afternoon.

The items had been stolen from the Walmart in West Sacramento earlier in the day and Woodland store personnel recognized the items as stolen.

Woodland Walmart staff contacted the Woodland Police Department and reported the alleged crime as well as descriptions of the individuals trying to return the items and their vehicle.

When officers arrived at the store, they arrested Joseph Dorris Jr., 28, in the described vehicle, and Tanner Servaughn, 24. The latter was taken into custody after he tried to run from officers in the store parking lot, said police Corp. Dave Krause. A third man with the pair was questioned and allowed to go after it was determined he was not involved with a crime.

Dorris Jr. and Servaughn were booked into Yolo County Jail on suspicion of possession of stolen property, burglary and conspiracy. In addition, Servaughn is accused of resisting a police officer.

Bail was set at $50,000 for each man.
