FOLSOM, CA - City leaders call it a win for the city and the region.

Folsom got the ultimate thumbs up Wednesday night to grow by nearly 5.5 square miles thanks to a unanimous vote by the Sacramento Local Agency Formation Commission.

It was an effort that took nearly 13 years.

The boundaries of the 3,500 acre area addition in Folsom include:

  • Highway 50 to the north
  • El Dorado County line to the east
  • White Rock Road to the south
  • Prairie City Road to the west

The plan will call for 1,050 acres of open space, 1,470 acres of residential construction and 510 acres of commercial, industrial and office space.

Wednesday night, Folsom City Council member Jeff Starksy said the expansion will allow people to live close to where they work, within the next 25 years.

"Our goal is to get people off Highway 50, off the freeway and kind of live where they work, where they play," Starksy said. "It just allows us to extend the existing amenities we have, in what we consider to be one of the best cities in California."

According to Starsky, the beauty of this plan is that residents voted on it and designed it.

The 3,500 acre area will officially become part of the city of Folsom by next month.

Starsky said the decision, from an economic standpoint, secures the city's future for the next 30 years.
