MANTECA, CA - Manteca police say the 39-year-old driver of a Ford Expedition died when a train struck his SUV at the N. Walnut Avenue train crossing Tuesday.

The impact sent the SUV onto its roof into a nearby front yard and crushed it. A passenger in the Expedition suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for care, said Sgt. Jodie Estarziau.

Police were called at 11:05 a.m. They learned the SUV was on southbound Walnut and the train was traveling in the northbound direction. Estarziau said witnesses said the railroad crossing arms appeared to be working properly at the time.

The driver's name was not being released until his family was informed.
