EL DORADO, CA - The varsity baseball coach at Union Mine High School has been arrested on felony charges involving alleged sex acts with a former student at the school.

David Robert Freeman, 38, was booked into the El Dorado County Jail Thursday and later released on $175,000 bail.

According to jail records, Freeman faces separate charges of having sex with a minor and oral copulation with a minor.

El Dorado Union School District Superintendent Christopher Hoffman said that in addition to coaching varsity baseball, Freeman also coaches junior varsity football and teaches physical education and computer technology.

Hoffman did not say how long ago the alleged victim left the school or when the alleged crimes took place.

Union Mine High School Principal Tony DeVille said Freeman had been placed on leave and would not be on campus Monday when school resumes after a three-week winter break.

DeVille said Freeman was popular among students and faculty and had been at the school since it was built in 1999.

"When people hear about this, they're going to be shocked," DeVille said.
