Two 16-year-olds accused of beating an elderly North Sacramento woman to death were formally charged with her murder on Thursday.
Calvin Eugene Pearson (shown on left) and Daniel Alan Russell (shown on right) were arraigned in Sacramento Superior Court Thursday afternoon. Both were charged with murder with special circumstances in the death of 90-year-old Marie Oliver in her Ellen Way home last Saturday. Pearson and Russell also each face one count of residential burglary and because the alleged burglary took place while the victim was home.
The third charge against Pearson and Russell is robbery. The robbery and burglary charges include the enhancement of use of a deadly weapon.
Prosecutors are trying Pearson and Russell as adults. Investigators say the teenagers kicked in Oliver's back door Saturday morning and attacked her with a cane. Then they are alleged to have looted her house for valuables and cash.
The victim was discovered when a neighbor came by Saturday night to check on her.
Detectives said Russell knew the victim from doing odd jobs for her over the past year.
The court is appointing attorneys for the suspects who are being held in Sacramento Juvenile Hall.
The next court date for Pearson and Russell is May 2.
