Smoke from wildfire near Sonora, Dec. 1, 2011
TUOLUMNE COUNTY, CA - Cal Fire says it's still fighting two fires in the Sierra foothills but progress was made Sunday.
As of Sunday evening, crews had reached 95 percent containment of the 100-acre East Fire located seven to 10 miles east of West Point in Tuolumne County, according to Cal Fire.
Firefighters kept the acreage burned in the Blue Fire along Blue Mountain Lookout Road, southeast of West Point, at 300 acres. It was 40 percent contained.
As for the Eldorado Fire Complex, the U.S. Forest Service said as of Sunday morning, the Salt Fire near Salt Springs had burned 349 acres and was 50 percent contained.
Tthe Blacksmith Fire in the area of Rubicon Ridge was 10 percent contained. About 35 acres were blackened. Also in the Rubicon Ridge area was the 22-acre Longjohn Fire at 90 percent containment.
The Sugarloaf Fire in the Alder Ridge area had burned about 11.5 acres and was at 50 percent containment.
It was believed all of the fires ignited Thursday during very strong winds. Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant said it was possible legal debris burning may have been the source of the fires but that wasn't confirmed.
