SACRAMENTO, CA - The Twin Rivers police officer, who was shot multiple times Saturday afternoon, is awake and talking.
Twin Rivers spokesperson William Cho said the 25-year-old officer is cracking jokes with his family.
The officer tried to pull over the suspect, Tyrone Smith, 32, for a traffic stop, but Smith fled from the officer and led him on a car chase, Sacramento police Sgt. Andrew Pettit said.

Pettit said Smith allegedly jumped out of the car and led the officer on a foot chase. Sometime during the foot chase, the officer was shot multiple times.
The quick response of a nearby Sacramento City fire crew and the officer's vest possibly saved his life, Cho said.
Cho did not release details of the gunshot wounds except that one shot penetrated the officer's abdomen, but missed all vital organs.
Smith was arrested Saturday around 11:15 p.m., Pettit said.
