LODI, CA - Lodi police have arrested a 42-year-old mother on suspicion of attempted murder after her car was hit by a train Friday afternoon in downtown Lodi.

Lodi police spokesman Eric Bradley arrested Christine Leach after she allegedly drove her car, with her 5-year-old daughter inside, into the side of a moving train.

Bradley said Leach was in the westbound lane of West Pine Street behind two or three cars waiting for the train to pass through the intersection.

A minute after the crossing arms were down and about 42 rail cars had passed, Leach suddenly accelerated, swerved into the eastbound lane and slammed into the side of the train, Bradley said.

Leach's daughter was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries.

Police were investigating if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

Bradley said the Union Pacific train's engineer did not know a car had driven into the train and continued north.
