MODESTO, CA - Parts of Highway 99 in Modesto, near Hatch Road, were closed for more than two hours Tuesday afternoon after a car carrier got a flat tire and crashed.

When the car carrier's tire blew, the driver, Roger Goreham, lost control of the car and collided with a Toyota Sienna, California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Parsons said.

The car and car carrier slammed into the metal guardrail attached to the concrete medium, Parsons said.

The car carrier continued to travel along the concrete medium, into some shrubs then hit the bridge pillar for the Hatch Road overpass.

The carrier's diesel tank burst into flames when it hit the pillar. Parsons said Roger Goreham was able to kick out the driver's side window and escape with passenger Rodney Goreham.

Both passengers in the car carrier suffered major injuries. The driver of the Toyota Sienna, Kwai Kwan, was not injured.

The northbound lanes were re-opened to traffic around 4:35 p.m. The southbound lanes were re-opened around 6 p.m.

CalTrans is checking the structural integrity of the Hatch Road overcrossing.
