Video: Sacramento police shoot, injure suspect

  • Busted window at Crepeville

SACRAMENTO, CA - A vandalism suspect is dead after being shot by police Tuesday afternoon.

The Sacramento Police Department tweeted "Update: Suspect from Officer Involved Shooting: Suspect pronounced deceased."

The shooting happened at 2546 24th Street, just south of Broadway, in front of the DMV headquarters.

The incident started at Curtis Park Market. The store clerk said the suspect came into the store to buy some soda and ice cream with an EBT card. When the machine didn't work, the suspect tried to get money from the ATM.

The clerk said when the ATM didn't work; the suspect took a baseball bat and smashed it. The suspect then left the store and smashed a window at Crepeville and Figure Women's Fitness.

Sgt. Andrew Pettit said  when police arrived on scene, the officer ordered the suspect to drop the bat multiple times.

Pettit said the suspect turned and moved toward the officer. In fear for his personal safety, the officer shot the suspect in the upper body.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It is unclear if the suspect swung the bat at the officers. No police officers were injured in the incident.

Police closed off Broadway from 24th Street to 26th Street to process the scene.

The police officer involved in the shooting was placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy.
