FAIRFIELD, CA - A judge has ordered a Solano County man to stand trial for murder in the deaths of his two friends during a drug-fueled night.
Investigators say 19-year-old Richard Calkins fatally shot his friends and wounded a third after they ate psilocybin mushrooms while hanging out at a Vacaville apartment.
During a two-day preliminary hearing, defense attorneys played a police interview in which Calkins appeared shocked to learn that he had killed his friends. He said he thought it was all a bad dream.
Defense attorneys had argued that Calkins be tried for involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of 20-year-olds Richard Perez and Cameron Silva.
The Vacaville Reporter reports that the judge said Wednesday there appeared to be an expressed intent to kill because all three victims were shot in the head.
