PLACERVILLE, CA - A Placerville jury has found 21-year-old Steven Colver guilty of first degree murder in the slaying of his former girlfriend's mother two years ago.

The jurors also convicted Colver of special allegations of lying in wait, use of deadly weapon and killing a witness to a crime.

Prosecutors alleged Colver fatally stabbed Joanne Witt, 47, in her El Dorado Hills bedroom sometime on June 11 or 12, 2009. Colver and Witt's daughter, Tylar Witt, were reportedly afraid Joanne Witt would report him to authorities because the two were having a sexual relationship. Tylar Witt was 14 and Colver was 19 at the time.

With hands clasped and head bowed, Colver appeared to take several deep breaths as the verdict was read. He will receive life in prison without the possibility of parole because of the special allegations when he is sentenced Aug. 12.

Jury deliberations lasted less than a day.

Defense attorneys argued Tylar Witt wielded the knife. She pled guilty to second degree murder but reached a plea deal with the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office in which she testified against Colver for a reduced charge and earlier release from prison.
