SACRAMENTO, CA - The countdown to doomsday reminds us that May 21 could bring the end of the world, according to the preachings of Harold Camping. A number of places around Sacramento were keeping that in mind Friday.
At Kupro's Bistro in Midtown Sacramento, a number of beers were served. "We have the beer called Lost Abbey Judgment Day ale which is perfect for this time," said Tim Varner. "We also sell a beer in the bottle called Le Fin Du Monde which in French means 'End of the World' which we didn't even realize til yesterday, so we thought that was really funny too."
Varner said they already ran out of the Le Fin Du Monde. "It's because of the name...because I posted it all day and everyone is coming here for the End of the World beer."
Comedian Keith Jensen was among several atheists who took to the microphone at Luna Cafe Friday night with their act for two "Ha Ha Heathens" shows.
"Yes. A whole bunch of atheists came together tonight to perform Rapture Eve in style," said Jensen. "I've got all atheist comedians up so it will be fun. Saturday is our big day. All the Christians will ascend up and the world is ours. We've got big plans!!"
"I'm an atheist and a lot of us do make jokes about the Rapture Day," said comedian Troy Conrad.
"I don't think it's going to happen because the Bible says no one knows it's coming," said Jensen. "It'll be a secret and then this guy goes and puts billboards up all over the place so even if God had been planning the rapture, he's' going be like 'ah, you jerk, you ruined my surprise!' Now he's going to have to push it off to 2012 and the Mayans will have won this one."
While some have made light of the situation, others are taking the date more seriously. Several churches are calling for volunteers to help with a "community serve" day.
