STOCKTON, CA - Marirose Powell loves nursing, but she loves her music as well, and that's where she's experiencing a lot of success these days.
Powell is a nursing supervisor at Stockton's Dameron Hospital, but she's also up for two awards at the L.A. music awards for her song "Hiding Me" and for best female performer.
Powell leads the group Marirose and the Gypsies, and they were in Los Angeles last week performing at a showcase of bands up for the awards.
The award program recognizes small bands not yet signed to record labels. But the list of previous performers and nominees is pretty impressive.
"Black Eyed Peas, Gwen Stefani ... a whole list of people who started by winning this award," said Powell.
She's not anticipating a sudden rise to stardom like those artists experienced. Powell is also a grandmother, and she's been in nursing for nearly 20 years.
But she does smile when imagining the possibilities.
"I don't know. We'll see. There may be some opportunity there," said Powell.
The award winners will be handed out in October. Until then, Powell and her group will be appearing throughout San Joaquin County with performances once or twice a month.
