STOCKTON, CA - A man suspected in a double homicide in Oakland and recently featured on the "America's Most Wanted" TV show, killed himself Wednesday in east Stockton as police attempted to take him into custody, according to authorities.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department was assisting the Oakland Police Department and had actually visited three different locations in San Joaquin County hoping to find the suspect Wednesday morning.
Around 7:00 a.m., law enforcement approached a home on Report Avenue and the suspect reportedly took his own life.
Though the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department wouldn't immediately identify the suspect, Oakland Police spokesman Jeff Thomason confirmed that the suspect was Damon Joseph Ferreira.
Ferreira, 34, was sought in a September shooting in Oakland that killed two men and injured a third. The case was featured last weekend on the Fox show "America's Most Wanted."
However, Thomason also said the program did not produce a tip that led to the encounter. He said police were following on other investigative information when they located Ferreira.
Oakland police Sgt. Gus Galindo said Ferreira may have opened fire because he mistakenly believed the men were downloading voicemails, text messages and other information from his cell phone without his permission.
Galindo said the semi-automatic pistol found with Ferreira appears to be the same weapon used in the Oakland shootings.
Ferreira's death comes a day after another "America's Most Wanted" fugitive Rafael Campbell was captured by U.S. marshals and Sacramento police officers at a Natomas apartment complex.
