ELK GROVE, CA - A 19-year-old student has died after crashing his car into a tree early Sunday morning, according to officials.

Elk Grove Police Department spokesman Chris Trim said the teen crashed his Chrysler PT Cruiser shortly after 1:30 a.m. at Shana Way and Whitelock Parkway. He sustained major injuries and was rushed to a local hospital where he died five hours later, said Trim. No one else was in the vehicle at the time of accident.

LaShonne Joe told News10 her nephew, Braeshaun Jackson, was a recent graduate of Laguna Creek High School and a current student at Sacramento City College. He had just turned 19 in September and was an active member and youth leader at his local church, Center of Praise.

Joe said Jackson had just dropped off a friend and was about two blocks away from home when he fell asleep at the wheel and crashed.

Joe warns other young people to use this tragedy as a reminder not to drive while tired.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash, and Trim said it's too early to determine whether alcohol may have played a factor.
