OAKLAND, CA - Usually, taxpayers don't like the idea the IRS might be looking for them. But this is one time they'll be happy to be found.
Over 15,000 Californians are owed some $16.65 million in refunds that were found undeliverable by the U.S. Postal Service due to mailing address errors.
"We want to get this money to taxpayers as fast as possible, and all we need is a good address," said IRS spokesman Jesse Weller out of the Oakland IRS office. "The sooner you update your address, the quicker you can get your refund."
Each year, a portion of refunds are returned by the post office, but this year, that number rose 16 percent.
According to a full list of unpaid refunds in four Sacramento area counties, Sacramento County taxpayers are owed $567,339, while those in Placer County have $131,200 coming to them. In El Dorado County, the figure is $114,545 and in Yolo, $58,619.
An alphabetic list of taxpayers due refunds shows 800 names in the Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties area.
The IRS Web site also has a "Where's My Refund?" tool to allow you to find out if you have any uncollected IRS refund money coming your way.
