SACRAMENTO, CA - Music sensation Rihanna finally broke her silence about being assaulted by her ex-boyfriend, singer Chris Brown, in a exclusive interview with Diane Sawyer on "Good Morning America" Thursday.
In the interview, Rihanna said that she is a strong person and if an abusive relationship could happen to her, it could happen to anyone.
Rihanna got back together with Chris Brown shortly after he assaulted her, but she said she soon realized her actions sent the wrong message to her fans -- and that gave her the courage to finally leave.
"I realized my selfish decision for love could result in to some young girl getting killed. I couldn't be easy with that part. I couldn't be held responsible for telling them. I just didn't realize how much impact I had on these girls' lives until that happened. It was a wake up call for me, big time," Rihanna said.
"I will say to any young girl going through domestic violence, don't react off of love. Come out of the situation and look at it third person for what it really is and then make your decision because love is so blind."
It has been 9 months since the assault happened. Locally, many of those who work with combating domestic violence every day said the pictures of the beaten and bruised superstar told a story of many others who are in and have been in an abusive relationship.
A representative for WEAVE, an organization dedicated to preventing and ending domestic violence, said that what happened to the pop star is getting teenagers talking about abusive relationships.
Meanwhile, teens are admitting that they or someone they know has been abused. A recent study by the Family Violence Prevention Fund estimated 25 percent of teens experience abuse in their dating relationship.
