With key exceptions, video game role playing games have seemed to be on a bit of a decline in years past. Maybe they're slowly falling out of favor with the gaming mainstream -- even with all of the free-to-play MMORPGs that seems to be coming out every few months. Then again, maybe the genre as a whole was just holding back for a great year sometime in the future.
Looking at the release schedule for 2013, it appears like that future year just might be this year. There are a wealth of new RPGs due out over the course of the year -- so many, in fact, that was difficult to narrow the list to just five. For example, two games that gamers are hotly awaiting (Square-Enix's Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII and indie developer Grinding Gear Games' Path of Exile) just missed the list by a razor's edge.
Still, we feel that the two MMOs and three console RPGs that made the list are the cream of the crop for 2013.
