Suzanne Phan, a multimedia journalist, joined News10 in August 2009. She brings more than 15 years of experience in reporting. Suzanne previously spent 9 years reporting for KCRA3 News in Sacramento, Stockton, and Modesto. Before that, she reported in various cities including: San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, and Carlsbad. She started her news career as a writer at KNSD NBC 7/39 in San Diego. She also had the opportunity to intern with CNN in Beijing and with CNN's Investigative Unit in Washington, D.C.
Suzanne is active in the Asian American Journalists Association, where she served three terms as co-president and one as vice president of the Sacramento Chapter. Her strong community involvement also includes various citizens academies, including the FBI and Sacramento District Attorney programs. She is a 2009 Loyola Journalist Law School fellow.
An avid adventurer, Suzanne has traveled to 20 countries. She has backpacked through India, Mexico, and Southeast Asia and most recently, survived a solo excursion through Guatemala and Honduras during some unexpected civil unrest.
As a graduate of the backpack journalism program at the Poynter Institute, where she was a fellow, Suzanne welcomes opportunities to combine her love of travel and different cultures and her multimedia news skills to bring unique stories to News10 viewers.
Suzanne is speaks four languages - English, Spanish, Mandarin and Vietnamese. She is a San Diego native and proud graduate of UCSD, where she majored in communications and political science and minored in Chinese studies. An honor student and scholarship recipient, Suzanne also studied at Beijing University and the Institute of Political Journalism at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
In her spare time, Suzanne likes to catch up on episodes of Top Chef and Project Runway, watch movies at Sacramento's Tower Theatre, and try out local restaurants with her significant other---who is also a newsie.
