Driest March/April
Thursday, May 1, 2008 posted by Monica Woods at 7:31 AM

Yesterday we ended April and put several records into the weather books. In Sacramento, Stockton and Modesto we had record low rainfall. In Sacramento, we only had 0.13" of rain for the combined months of March and April. For the same time period, Stockton only recorded 0.06". Modesto was even drier with only 0.01" of rain for the March/April period.
We need rain and will likely not see any significant rain until October. At this point we are 77% of normal. This is double bad news since last year was extremely dry too.

Fire Season Starts Soon
Thursday, April 24, 2008 posted by Monica Woods at 6:06 AM

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is getting the word out to start clearing that defensible space and make sure you have a burn permit. Starting May 1, Amador and El Dorado county residents will need a permit to burn.
There are two conditions fire officials look at to determine the fire danger. The first is winds. Unfortunately, this year we've had stronger than usual winds in the area. The second is fuel moisture. Fuel refers to the vegetation in the area. According to CDF, this year our fuel moisture is 30% lower than last year at this time.
It could be a long fire season, so now is the time to prepare.

2008 Hurricane Season
Monday, April 7, 2008 posted by Monica Woods at 7:21 AM

We are just about two months away from the start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Right now, forecasters are predicting an active season. The average season produces 10 tropical storms and six hurricanes. This year the Colorado State University forecast team is predicting 13 tropical storms and seven hurricanes. La Nina is keep Pacific Ocean waters cool but Atlantic waters warm, so this may help increase the amount of storms forming. Stacy tuned...

Time change
Friday, March 7, 2008 posted by Monica Woods at 7:25 AM

Okay it's that time of year again to spring forward...we LOSE an hour of sleep. UGH! It's great to have it lighter at night, but quite frankly I am a morning person. There's nothing better than getting the day started with some sunshine. It's so hard to get the kids to sleep at night when they can't wind down because they've been out playing late.

The kids sure love it though and that makes it all worthwhile.

Allergy season is coming up
Tuesday, February 26, 2008 posted by Monica Woods at 8:14 AM

Some of the trees are in bloom and the flowers are starting to pop up around town. It may look beautiful but for some of us it means....ALLERGIES! Yikes. Just the thought of endless sneezing and itchy eyes makes me wish for the 100s to be here soon. I love the spring time but it is so horrible to suffer through one of the most beautiful times of the year. I had allergy shots so the symptoms are a bit less severe. Each year is different so I am hoping this allergy season will be a short one.

Have you checked out the education section of news10.net lately? We have a new section there called Weather 101. It's a really great tool for teachers and students or just the amateur meteorologist. There's a lot of fun stuff there including how to participate in science fairs. Check it out if you have time.

acorns=wet season
Monday, February 11, 2008 posted by Monica Woods at 3:22 AM

Last fall someone e-mailed me about the numerous acorns they were finding in their yard. I asked my friend and landscaper, Jim Gloria, if he had ever heard anything about what that might mean. He said he had a conversation with someone once who mentioned that means it will be a wet rainy season. This was nature way of getting the cycle ready for new growth. The trees release the acorns, the soil becomes unusually moist and then acorns can get through the ground. So far, this season has been wet but we still have two more rainy months to go.
