Log on at 5 p.m. and talk online with teammates Ticha Penicheiro and Laura Harper.

At 6 p.m., we'll return to the hot topic of gay marriage and the state Supreme Court's decision paving the way for gay marriage in California. We had a gay marriage supporter as our featured guest yesterday. Today gay marriage opponent, Randy Thomasson, will join us in the studio.

If you're looking for something to do this weekend, you might want to head to Oakdale and the Cowboys N Chocolate Festival. On this morning's Live_Online, we found out (actually, no surprise!) how much people love their chocolate, Jordan almonds and jawbreakers, too. Candy makers, Janet Sconza Angers and Greg Cater, of Sconza Candy Company joined us in the studio. Sconza is taking over the old Hershey's chocolate plant in Oakdale and should be ready to start producing chocolate, Jordan almonds and jawbreakers by late September or early October. They'll be handing out goodies at this weekend's chocolate festival. Have fun!

Oakdale's Chocolate Tradition Lives On

Hi everyone, it's News10's Sharon Ito.

It was a blow to Oakdale when Hershey closed its chocolate plant last year and shipped jobs across the border to Mexico. After all, Hershey had been a fixture in Stanislaus County since the mid-1960's. But the chocolate tradition continues this weekend in Oakdale with the Cowboys N Chocolate Festival and the pending arrival of the Sconza Candy Company. Oakdale will not only continue to be a chocolate capital, but the home of Jordan almonds, Boston beans and jawbreakers, too.

On Live_Online at 11 a.m., you'll hear the story of the Sconza Candy Company, how it all started in the Sconza family kitchen in 1939 with their home-made peanut brittle. The company will be leaving its operations in Oakland and opening later this year in Oakdale, with a promise to use locally grown produce. The company's already hired some former Hershey employees.

Janet Sconza Angers, who's the third generation of Sconza candy makers and head of customer service, and Greg Cater, who's vice president of sales, will be our studio guests. We'll see how their family, company and candy philosophy has kept them in business for nearly 70 years.
Log on and join our conversation. Teachers aren't happy with some of the proposed budget cuts and protests are planned throughout the day. We'll be live streaming those demonstrations and opening up the Live_Online chat to get your comments.

This morning on Live_Online, author and grape grower Paula Moulton shared her story.
One of our longtime viewers, Walt from Roseville, hit the mark again when he called Paula a "modern pioneer woman." Paula knew it was time to make a change in her family's life, to slow things down and find a simpler life in the country. She knew nothing about growing grapes when they moved to Sonoma County, but knew her passion was working the land. So she took a year's worth of classes and basically learned how to farm through trial and error, but over the years she's sold her grapes to some of the best-known wineries. She is now creating a new wine to be called Midnight Moulton, after her late husband Chuck Moulton. He died in a car crash several years ago, three days before Paula's memoir was released. Paula is now doing a belated book tour for "Seasons Among the Vines: Life Lessons from the California Wine Country." She's working on a second book about her family's struggle to overcome adversity, hitting rock bottom but surviving, and carving a new path in life.

Tell us what you're talking about and the topics you'd like us to explore on Live_Online. Paula and her family decided to leave the hectic pace of San Francisco for the quiet vineyards of Sonoma County. She gave up a corporate career for life as a farmer, except she had no experience in farming. She had to learn everything from scratch, from driving a tractor to getting rid of pesky bugs and animals that devoured her crop.

Just days before her memoir was due to be released, her husband Chuck, a doctor, died in a traffic accident. Paula was suddenly alone with three children to raise and a struggling farm to maintain. One passage from her book was especially poignant:

"Chuck has told me that his greatest fear in life is to die without having accomplished anything, and mine is that I will die having accomplished so much that I was never able to stop long enough to soak up the beauty of life."

Paula has learned to soak up life's beauty by living close to the earth, cultivating the ground and producing a crop for some of the country's best-known wineries. It's a life filled with hard work and some hard lessons in life, and within them is a lesson for all of us. I'd like you to meet Paula Moulton at 11 a.m.

Gas Spills into San Francisco Bay

8:42 a.m. We're awaiting a news conference in Martinez. There's also a new record high for Sacramento at $3.94.

As you can imagine, there are fewer people taking a vacation. If you drive cross country, you'll break the bank filling your tank. If you fly somewhere, airlines also keep adding surchanges for extra fuel prices, checking luggage, and whatever else they can think of.
So here's an option: stay at home...a staycation!

There are great places for adventure right in your own backyard. This is the second dry year in a row for California. Elissa said according to state projections for this year, California will have only 61-percent of its normal water supply. So she expects more California cities to issue drought alerts and call for voluntary conservation measures. During our chat, we had a question about the status of water meters in California. Here's what we found out. Since 1992, state law has required the installation of water meters as part of all new construction. Another state law requires all water suppliers to install water meters on all customer connections by January 1, 2025. One of our longtime viewers, Roseville Walt, came up with his own conservation slogan during our chat. "Beer, it's not the only liquid on tap. Conserve your water supply!" State water managers are, no doubt, concerned about drought conditions in California. With low water levels at Folsom Reservoir and less-than-expected runoff in the Sierra, the city of Roseville's already issued a Stage 1 drought alert and has asked its customers to reduce water consumption by 10-percent. Other cities across California are considering water rationing and conservation measures.

On Live_Online at 11 a.m., our studio guest is Elissa Lynn, who's a senior meteorologist with the California Department of Water Resources. How serious is the drought outlook for California?
Join our online chat with Elissa.

On Live_Online at 5 p.m., Daniel Berlant with CAL FIRE will join News10's Jennifer Smith online as California prepares for fire season. The California Fish and Game commission has already banned salmon fishing off coastal waters this year, and today it's voting on whether to extend the ban to Central Valley rivers. Experts say we could see record-low spawning this fall and the ban is intended to ensure the chinook's survival. News10's Will Frampton is following the story. News10's George Warren spent some time in Elk Grove this week and his story, which airs this evening, puts Elk Grove's explosive growth into perspective. Believe it or not, it was just over 20 years ago that Elk Grove installed its first stop light. News10's Karen Massie has an incredibly heartwarming story of a Sacramento woman who's been a foster mom to 1,200 kids (that's a lot of peanut butter sandwiches and hugs, too) and adopted ten of them! And finally in his California Postcard, News10's Jonathan Mumm takes us inside San Francisco's Flower Market.

Jonathan joined us for Live_Online at 11 a.m. when we chatted about summer movies. The blockbuster topping his list is the new Indiana Jones movie, set to hit theaters on May 22nd. It's been 19 years since the last Indiana Jones movie and Harrison Ford will be back, 19 years older (he's turning 66 in July), and in case you were wondering, he's still got his swagger.

See you online on Monday when meteorologist Elissa Lynn updates us on California's anticipated drought. Yes, a clip of the movie and a press kit -- and a brand new leather whip! Jonathan is still trying to master the snap-wrist move that Harrison Ford handles with such ease.

We'll talk about the summer movie season with Jonathan, our resident critic, on Live_Online at 11 a.m. What's your must-see summer movie? There are known faults but historically speaking, the region does not have the kind of fault structure that precludes significant displacement and thus ground shaking in an earthquake.

That's not to say earthquakes don't happen. In 1975 a moderate earthquake measuring magnitude 5.7 occurred near the Oroville Dam. The dam held but the event prompted further study of a dam in Auburn, about 40 miles southeast, that was in the beginning stages of construction.

In 1976, the Association of Engineering Geologists, Seismic Hazards Committee concluded that the concrete dam proposed for Auburn would fail in the event of a moderate quake like that at Oroville and construction ceased.

Geologists generally agree that even though earthquake hazard maps do not place much of the Central Valley as at great a risk as other areas of California, the impact of a major quake quake along the Hayward Fault which lies under the Coast Range range to the west could have a definite impact in interior California.

Join our Live_Online Chat at 5 p.m.

Changing the World

Good Afternoon Everyone, I'm Kelly Jackson.

The first ever Pangea Day will be celebrated this Saturday, May 10th. Crime is also a big concern based on the emails we received from viewers on what they would like to ask the candidates.

You will have an active role in tonight's mayoral forum, sponsored by News10, the Sacramento Bee and the California Museum, and featuring all seven candidates on the same stage for the first time. In addition to viewer questions already submitted online, and in some cases, recorded on videotape, you can be part of the online chat as we live stream the forum beginning at 6 p.m. on Live_Online. News10 News10's Marcey Brightwell will be moderating the Live_Online chat, responding to your comments and forwarding some of your questions to the forum's moderator, News10's Dale Schornack. Sacramento Bee reporter Terri Hardy and I have also been putting together a list of questions and hopefully the candidates' answers will help you judge their vision for the city, their priorities, and the qualifications and personal qualities they'd bring to the job.

We'll actually get the online conversation started at 5 p.m. when Sacramento Bee columnist Marcos Breton joins News10's Jennifer Smith to preview the forum. How will Marcos judge the candidates and what is he expecting to hear tonight?

Here's tonight's lineup:

6-7 p.m. Sacramento Mayoral Forum airs live on News10 and live streamed on news10.net.

7 p.m. Hour-long forum wraps up on News10.

7-7:30 p.m. The conversation continues online as the candidates answer additional viewer
questions and follow-up questions from the panelists.

6-7:30 p.m. Post your comments and chat online with News10 political reporter Marcey
Brightwell.

11 p.m. Wrap-up of the mayoral forum on News10 at 11.

June 3rd Election Day

Mayoral Candidates Onstage Together

We're talking politics with Sacramento Bee columnist Daniel Weintraub at 11 a.m. on Live_Online. This evening all seven candidates running for Sacramento mayor will appear together for the first time and lay out their vision for the city. The occasion is the Mayoral Forum sponsored by News10, the Sacramento Bee and the California Museum. Voters will be playing an integral role in this forum, asking their own questions and letting the candidates know about the issues that matter most to them. Sacramento Bee reporter Terri Hardy, News10's Dale Schornack and I will also be asking the candidates a series of questions that will examine their ideas for solving the city's most pressing matters and their reasons for entering the race. The Mayoral Forum airs live at 6 p.m. on News10 and online at news10.net.

We'll get Dan's take on the mayor's race--how vulnerable is the incumbent, Heather Fargo, can political newcomer, native son and former NBA star, Kevin Johnson, make the case for change at City Hall, and can the other five challengers make any inroads?

Dan will also take a look at the democratic race for president, Barack Obama's win in North Carolina and Hillary Clinton's win in Indiana, and whether any candidate is stronger today in what's been a bruising struggle. You can chat with Dan online at 11 a.m. or just send us an email: LiveOnline@news10.net

Fostering a Child

Good Afternoon Everyone, I'm Kelly Jackson.

Veronica Bryant has two biological children, and a few years ago decided she wanted to become a foster parent. Now her household is busy with five teenagers! Bryant is a foster parent to three teenage girls and says she wouldn't have it any other way.

The month of May of National Foster Care month. It's a time to raise awareness of the need for foster parents.

We were also joined by Heather Daniels of Families First. Daniels is a Resource Family Certifier, so if you become a foster parent she is the person who basically gives the final o-k.
Daniels says future foster parents go through an extensive screening process, and weeks of training. She says there are no age requirements...just so you are physically capable of parenting. Like Bryant, there are single foster parents too.

I hope you'll join Jennifer Smith tonight at Five. She'll be joined by Heather Penner a Placement Supervisor from Families First, as well as Diamond Harris who used to be in the foster care system. Harris will talk about what happens to kids like him who age out of the system.

Have a great day!

National Foster Care Month

Good Morning Everyone, I'm Kelly Jackson.

May is National Foster Care Month, and there are plenty of events taking place in the state to raise awareness about foster care and also ways you can get involved.

The good news is the number of children in the California foster care system has decreased. According to child advocates since 2000, the number has dropped from 108-thousand to
75-thousand children in the foster care system. While those numbers have dropped there's still a need for foster parents. Today at 11am, I'll be joined by a foster parent and Heather Daniels a Resource Family Certifier from Families First.

I hope you'll join us at 11am.

Behind the Rising Gas Prices

Join News10's Jennifer Smith for Live_Online at 5 p.m. when she talks with Turlock filmmaker Scott Roberts about the new documentary he co-produced, "GasHole." The film looks at the history of oil prices, and asks why oil companies are making record profits and why alternative fuels aren't readily available. Log on at 5 p.m. and join the chat.

Sacramento mayoral candidate, Adam Daniel, was our studio guest at 11 a.m. With the city facing a 58-million dollar deficit, Daniel said all departments should undergo a 10-20% cut, including the police and fire departments. He wants to shake things up at City Hall and said K Street symbolizes his frustration with city government -- that city leaders embark on a major project, but can't seem to finish it. Daniel also wondered why Kevin Johnson hasn't been showing up at community forums where the rest of the candidates are meeting with voters and answering their questions. He said Johnson's absence smacks of an "elitist mentality."

All seven candidates for mayor have agreed to appear at this Wednesday's News10/Sacramento Bee Mayoral Forum at the California Museum. He's a human resources trainer who's making his first run at public office. On his Web site, he writes, "Sacramento needs a candidate to connect with. Someone who feels the burden high taxes, lack of opportunity for graduating high school students and the social down slide of the K street area." Do you have a question or comment for Adam Daniel? Log on and join our chat.

On Live_Online at 5 p.m., News10's Jennifer Smith will talk with one of the producers of the documentary, "GasHole" (don't you love the title!), which examines the history of oil prices and the future of alternative fuels. "GasHole" is playing this evening at The Crest Theater.

You can always send us an email: LiveOnline@news10.net

Shred It & Forget It

We'll continue our online chat on identity theft at 5 p.m. with John Holt of Debt and Credit Solutions in Sacramento. He'll talk about how to restore your credit after your identity's been stolen.

In our 11 a.m. online chat, privacy expert Joanne McNabb told us when it comes to identity theft, a majority of the victims have no idea how their personal information was stolen -- whether it was through mail theft, online theft or someone pilfering through the garbage. So one of the ways to reduce your risk of ID theft is to destroy as many documents as you can that contain your personal data.

With that end in mind, the Better Business Bureau is holding a "Shred It & Forget It Event" tomorrow, May 3rd, at American River College from 10 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. You can bring up to six boxes of documents (old bank statements, credit card bills and other papers) and have them professionally shredded. The first three boxes will be shredded at no cost. For additional boxes, there's a $3 per box donation for the Boys & Girls Club of Sacramento County.

Joanne gave us another ID theft prevention tip. If you're a catalog shopper and have a lot of catalogs around the house, be sure to shred the order form that has your name on it. That form is often tied to your billing information and someone could get their hands on it, if it isn't shredded.

Coming up Monday on Live_Online at 11 a.m., we'll continue our Sacramento mayoral candidates forum. Candidate Adam Daniel will be taking your questions online.

Be sure to watch News10 and news10.net on Wednesday, May 7th, when our mayoral forum takes place at the California Museum, in conjunction with the Sacramento Bee. All seven candidates have accepted our invitation to appear. If you have a question for the candidates, go ahead and email me: LiveOnline@news10.net
