Hello!
Thursday, May 15, 2008 posted by Melissa Crowley at 10:27 PM

Want to say thanks for all the nice emails wondering where I've been...
Been taking some time to rest with baby # 2 on the way and due later this summer.
The family is doing well, big sister Mia is getting excited and seems happy to have Mom around the house. Although she does ask "Mom do you miss your friends at News10?"
The answer...yes. But I'm fortunate to get to see them as well.
Hope to see you all soon too. It all depends on what's best for this little one...

I-5 : Big plans, big delays expected soon
Friday, April 4, 2008 posted by Melissa Crowley at 9:05 AM

Okay so no one likes delays or sitting in traffic. But short-term pain for long-term gain is the goal of Caltrans and CC Meyers to rehab a stretch of I-5 in downtown Sacramento known as the boat section, built in the 1960's.
Starting May 30th, NB Interstate 5 will close from just past the 50/CCF connector to near J Street, for at least two weeks and SB I-5 in Sacramento will follow with a full closure in part of downtown mid-June.
There may be some ramps open and downtown and Old Sac will still be accessible according to Mark Dinger w/ Caltrans. We chatted about the upcoming project and its scope and I wanted to share some of his nuggets with you. By the way you'll be hearing alot more on the project, the timetable and alternatives..and we have the info for you on News10.net's traffic page under the transit resources link.
Check it out
http://www.news10.net/travel/traffic/transit-resources.aspx

But the main point Mark says is think ahead and plan to make some changes now...or sit in extra traffic soon.
Here are some snippets:

Melissa:
"What do you think are the top things about the I-5 project people
should know?"

Mark Dinger/Caltrans:
"Work begins Friday night at 8 p.m. on May 30 so be ready Monday, June 2
Plan your alternate routes now - practice your route before June 2 so
you will know what to expect. Add another 20 - 30 minutes to your drive
just to be safe.
Consider your transit alternatives, visit http://www.fixi5.com/ or
http://www.sacregion511.org/transit/ and see what transit options might
work for you.
Despite the construction, downtown and Old Sacramento are still
accessible. Check the ramp and travel restrictions before you go at
http://www.fixi5.com so you'll know exactly what ramps and lanes will be
closed.
The construction schedule is subject to change (especially if they
finish early) so watch those traffic reports and stay informed.

Melissa:
How does this compare to other projects?

Mark:
This project is unique in that we are trying an expedited work schedule that will have local and regional traffic impacts. This "get in, get to work and get out" philosophy has been successful in other projects (MacArthur Maze, Santa Clarita Truck
Tunnel, Bay Bridge) and we think it will be successful here in Sacramento.

Melissa :
Estimated SB 5 closure starts? June 30th????

Mark:
The SB closure is tentatively scheduled for Friday, June 13 at 8 p.m.

School Reading and school memories
Wednesday, March 5, 2008 posted by Melissa Crowley at 7:59 AM

This week's celebration of reading in many schools with Read Across America day and the celebration of Dr Seuss' birthday is always a pleasure to take part in.
Reading to kids is one of my favorite things to do. I was able to take my almost 4 year old daughter with me to Cottage Elementary and it was great to see kids interest in reading sparked. Their principal promises to shave his head if they reach the one million minutes of reading mark. Go for it!
Reading is a special part of my life. I'm reading the "Kite Runner" now. Other reads are piling up...magazines included as I don't have quite as much time to get to it as I'd like. :)
Speaking of fond memories, heard from several old friends from my high school class of 1988, Scituate High School in Ma. Wow time flies! Can it be 20 years? Good to hear from all and get some updates.
They remember I loved journalism even back then- we had a great TV production class and school paper. You never know where those dreams will lead- try it out!

Dreaming....and Dreams Come True
Friday, February 22, 2008 posted by Melissa Crowley at 9:19 AM

The News10 Goodmorning Dream Jobs series was such a treat for me...to try skating... er... sliding with the Disney on Ice Princesses at the Stockton Arena. What a beautiful facility by the way. Anyway we had a ball. Trying something you've always wanted to do is great..and I think enthusiasm hopefully overcomes any lack of talent :)
My instructor and cast member Jon Stackhouse is living his dream and touring the country with the production. His advice on following dreams is...do something you love and stick with it. What do you want to do?
I am blessed to get to do that every morning. And speaking of...we are thrilled to have a new arrival on the way due August! So I was very careful today to just slide hopefully gracefully with no tricks. Not to mention even without a wee one on board, I can't do tricks anyways. Although growing up in Scituate, MA I did love to skate on the frozen cranberry bogs, so I am used to sliding and admit I do have my own skates. What a treat to do again today!

Dream Jobs
Monday, February 4, 2008 posted by Melissa Crowley at 2:26 PM

I feel blessed to be in a field I've always dreamed about. Since I was seven I kept a journal and knew I wanted to do something in communication. But this month the News10 Goodmorning team is taking on what would another dream job be? For me it's a chance to skate with the Disney Princesses on Ice, or at least a morning trying some routines! You can check it out/chuckle Friday February 22nd now from 5-7 am on News10Goodmorning when I'll be live from the Stockton Arena. We'll also put the video up on our News10 Goodmorning page.
I'd also love to try being a race car driver...but maybe another time, especially after my dismal finish in a Nascar Fantasy race league. :) So what is your dream job? Love to hear about it.
We're wondering if anyone has always wanted to be a newscaster and maybe they can join us one morning in February. Send us or me an email, MCrowley@News10.net
Keep dreaming...that's where the best plans start!

From the Red Carpet at the Hall of Fame Awards
Wednesday, December 5, 2007 posted by Melissa Crowley at 9:39 PM

Wow!!! Willie Mays offering advice for kids to follow their dreams...the son of Jonas Salk, MD, Peter representing the family, talking about how Jackie Robinson once helped him up when he tripped looking for an autograph! The inductees all seemed genuinely happy to meet and share with each other. Rita Moreno was a kick!
The Governor and Maria Shriver had the inductees or family members each introduce on another which was kinda cool. Tiger Woods introduced Willie Mays and Mays took off his hat when the tribute to Jackie Robinson was read.
Rita Moreno introduced the red-carpet reticent Steve Jobs.
Elizabeth Taylor did not make it, calling Shriver this afternoon after a fall but promising to get her medal from the Governor soon. Whether born here or calling the state home, they all felt the spirit of California encouraged their growth even as they faced any adversity. I think it's fitting that the exhibit with manuscripts from John Steinbeck is opposite the computers of Steve Jobs. Each generation and all backgrounds have something to celebrate. Some of the inductees posed the question "What will you do to get in the California Hall of Fame someday?" I look forward to hearing the answers! :) By the way the questions I asked will be part of the museums' exhibit and show on the event...we'll keep you posted! I was thrilled to be asked to do it and meet such an accomplished group. The wife of Milton Berle was also very moved by the way and the Governor said that Milton Berle once told him if you don't see a door opening, build one. There certainly seemed to be alot of pride in what being California means tonight...even if the definition is different or background as well, not taking no for an answer seems a common trait with the inductees and their success! There was a pretty good turn-out from the public watching the red carpet arrivals as well. Good for Sacramento!
Check out the exhibit, donated memorabilia and see what you like best.
1020 O street, the California Museum for History, Women and the Arts. I'm told next year's planning is already underway with the second class of Hall of Famers now inducted!!

California Hall of Fame
Tuesday, December 4, 2007 posted by Melissa Crowley at 4:53 PM

I'm so thrilled to get to meet and talk to the inductees at the 2007 California Hall of Fame Awards. Elizabeth Taylor tops the list...Steve Jobs...Tiger Woods..all actually...as does meeting the family of Jonas Salk.
You can watch the inductees do the red carpet walk on news10.net or come by O Street Wednesday night by 6pm.
If you haven't had a chance yet to visit the California Museum of History, Women and the Arts where the induction will take place, check it out.
Very cool located at 1020 O Street. Right now there is an exhibit from Hearst Castle that's amazing among many others including the Hall of Famers. www.californiamuseum.org fyi
This years' Ca. Hall of Fame inductees will all donate something to the Hall of Fame exhibit as well by the way.
Hearing great stories and inspiration is my favorite part of the business and I'm looking forward to hearing all the inductees and family members talk about what inspired them and what advice they have.
Their interviews will eventually be part of the Museum's exhibit. I'm honored to be a part of that. I enjoyed covering the California Women's Conference and visiting with First Lady Maria Shriver and seeing her passion to recognize these achievements.
It was a bit hectic the first time we were able to visit with the fires and also my photographer skills :) but when we sat down again I genuinely left feeling passionate about what we do..and what honoring people in our community with the Minerva awards, and those who've had a big impact on California..can do to inspire others.
Can't wait to hear those future hall of famer stories someday!
Meantime I'm stressed about to wear and bought nice shoes, high heels for once (no sneakers I promise) !
